What is a cover letter?

A cover letter is a document that is submitted when applying for a job, notifying the employer of your motivation for applying for the job. It is usually accompanied by your CV and helps the hiring manager to understand how good of a fit you are for their company, how you can add value, and why you want the job.

Do we really need a cover letter?

A good cover letter will not guarantee you the job, but a bad one will most definitely ensure that you don’t even get called for the interview. There is no guarantee that the recruiters will read all the cover letters they receive. However, if you fail to submit one when it is needed, it will be marked as a red flag.

There can be certain instances when a cover letter is not mandatory. Some jobs may not ask you to submit one. Sometimes you might not have time to submit a customized cover letter or you won’t find a specific place to submit one. In such cases, it is okay to not submit one.

Tips for writing a seamless cover letter

Before you start writing your cover letter, consider the below points for a perfect cover letter.

  1. Keep it short- Limit it to one page. The recommended word count is around 250–400 words.
  2. Customize your cover letter- You can tailor your cover letter to the company you are applying for. A good opening point is to explain why you want to work for them and why you think you are the best candidate for them.
  3. Don’t repeat your CV- Use your cover letter as a complement to your CV. Never include or repeat the same information as in the CV. Draw points from the CV and demonstrate how you could fit well for the job.
  4. Proofread and get feedback- Proofread and check for any errors in your cover letter before submitting it. If you are unsure whether you have written it properly, get feedback from an expert in the industry.
